Mastervolt, the Dutch-based manufacturer of premium electrical systems, is delighted to announce an exciting new partnership with Team New Zealand (with Enertec Marine Systems), one of the strongest sailing teams in the world. Mastervolt has been appointed as Exclusive Team Supplier of batteries for the CAMPER project for the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race.

Since the America’s Cup in 2007, Team New Zealand has been running three exciting projects to keep the team active and diversified. The team campaigned a TP52 in the 2009 and 2010 Audi MedCup Series, winning the season championship in both years.

The Louis Vuitton Pacific Series was created by the team in 2009, a match race event, which proved so popular it was expanded to four events as the Louis Vuitton Trophy. Team New Zealand won the 2009 regatta and three of the four LVT events. Most recently, the team partnered with Camper, a Spanish international footwear brand, to design, build and campaign an entry in the Volvo Ocean Race, which starts in late October.

Two new 'Powerbook' guides.

The Powerbooks are comprehensive resources for boat owners, acting as ‘how to’ manuals for designing systems and detailed catalogues of all Mastervolt products. The 152 page Marine Systems Powerbook provides a comprehensive, step by step guide to designing and specifying a complete electrical power management system for motorboats, sailing craft and catamarans. Each section begins with an analysis of typical ‘boaters’ requirements on an average boat being used for each purpose, and providing an easy guide to calculating total power consumption. Mastervolt upgrades its Mass Charger range for even better endurance in tough environments.

Leading Dutch electrical specialist Mastervolt has just completed a system-wide upgrade on its top-end battery chargers, the Mass Charger range.

These rugged chargers have already proved themselves to be completely reliable in some of the harshest conditions afloat, yet Mastervolt has made them tougher still with an even greater resistance to heat, vibration, humidity, and condensation. It has also added a number of technological improvements, including MasterBus connectivity.

Mastervolt’s Mass Chargers are part of the ‘best in class’ range. Available in 12, 24 and 48-Volt models, they are also in demand on commercial ships, explorer vessels and offshore oil installations, where they ensure that full battery power is available 24/7, which is crucial in an emergency.

What sets these chargers apart is the over-engineering of the components and the use of high-frequency electronics, which leaves them under-stressed and operating at much lower internal temperatures. The chassis is made from anodised aluminium to prevent corrosion, and Mastervolt has thoughtfully kept the footprint exactly the same as earlier models, so a straight swap during a refit or overhaul can be done with minimal down time.

A special cooling process means the Mass Charger range can operate at full power, continuously, in an engine room with the temperature at a blistering 45 ^oC, and the vibration rating is to the demanding IEC60945 standard. Reliability is in excess of 280,000 hours without failure (MTBF), and the Mass Charger emits only ultra-low electromagnetic radiation, so nearby systems will be unaffected. It also has electromagnetic immunity from transformers or pumps that may share the bulkhead.

Because of the commercial and superyacht applications, the approvals on all 230V single phase 24/75 and 24/100 Mass Chargers are to DNV, Germanische Lloyd, Bureau Veritas, and Lloyds standards. This allows older chargers to be swapped for the upgrades whilst still preserving the approvals.

Rugged reliability apart, the Mass Charger also excels at its job – providing clean, DC output from what could be intermittent and unreliable shore power. In fact, the output is so clean the charger can be used as a dedicated power supply in it’s own right, with a unique power take-off.

The input range of voltages can be harnessed between 190-265V, and the heavy-duty design allows for full current delivery even though vessels cable losses require the charger to charge at a voltage of 30V. After 20 years of research and development, the 3-phase step charger technology has proved itself to be the quickest and most efficient way to keep healthy batteries at peak condition. The process is also ideal for revitalising completely flat batteries to minimise the ill effects of total discharge.

If there is an interruption in the shore-power during the process, the Mass Charger picks up where it left off, rather than starting the 3-phase cycle all over again. There is even a setting for the delicate charging of Nickel Cadmium batteries.

Amongst the upgrades is the addition of full MasterBus connectivity, allowing the charger to communicate with the rest of a Mastervolt system by means of a single ‘plug and play’ CAN-bus cable. This provides total monitoring and automatic control of the distribution system when power is being generated from several different sources.

"We’ve made the best even better," explained Marc Persoon, Mastervolt’s Marketing Manager. "The Mass Charger range is the ultimate in reliability. We have maintained the dimensions and connections of the earlier models, but managed to actually improve the design from the experience of 10 years of heavy use, from the Polar Regions to the Tropics."

The Mass Charger range features 11 models in total, with two 12-volt, seven 24-volt and two 48-volt versions.

As a result of their ongoing partnership, leading Dutch-based electrical specialist MASTERVOLT and the Austrian specialist of Marine diesel engines STEYR MOTORS are proud to announce that the revolutionary series hybrid propulsion system based on the GPX has just been announced.

Mastervolt has been at the forefront of pioneering work in this field, including close co-operation with the Austrian engine manufacturer Steyr.

Steyr has developed a highly efficient and compact Genset combining a unique, powerful diesel engine with a highly efficient PM (permanent magnet) generator to be integrated within the GPX models. The core of the Genset is a newly developed horizontal 2 cylinder parallel twin marine diesel engine with 25 kW based on the proven STEYR MOTORS M1 Monoblock design, and equipped with a STEYR MOTORS patented mass balancing system.

Talks are in progress with yacht builders for them to become potential field testing partners, because the application of the GPX technology results in the ideal propulsion and electric power system. With the benefits of electric propulsion, high torque at low speeds making manoeuvring extremely easy, it enables you to cruise with just the sound of the water passing the hull. The usual drawback of limited range will not be part of this system, as the GPX will operate as a range extender.

The GPX is best described as a compact, intelligent power station, and features a small but powerful engine with generator, an inverter, a three-step battery charger and shore power hub all in one neat package. Much smaller and lighter than conventional generators, it supplies everything needed to run high-demand systems on a boat, and does so with automatic precision. By using energy from the batteries to support the smaller and highly efficient generator at peaks, the generator can be much smaller. By combining a variable speed generator with the highly efficient permanent magnet, the generator can be another 15% smaller at the same output levels. The built-in inverter produces perfect sine-wave output power for any onboard application, even the most sensitive, like electric cooking plates. Communicating with all the systems on board via a CAN-Bus network, it also intelligently manages any shore power feeds, and ensures that batteries of whatever type are replenished as quickly as possible.

Mastervolt extends range Mass Combi

Leading Dutch-based electrical specialist Mastervolt is proud to announce the addition of two 48-volt models to its impressive line-up of Mass Combi inverter/battery chargers. The two new models are designed to help cater for the growing demand for e-propulsion systems.

The Mass Combi is a remarkably intelligent power management system, combining a sophisticated battery charger with a pure sine wave inverter. When the yacht is running on mains power, either from a shore connection or from the generator, the Mass Combi ensures the careful charging of the batteries, and also has a slave output to charge an engine start or bow-thruster battery.

However, if there is a sudden surge in demand, such as when an air-conditioner starts up, the system automatically brings in the inverter to make up the shortfall. Energy from the battery is applied to support the shore power in powering the demands; hence the name Power Support. Should the shore power drop out altogether, the inverter immediately takes over. This switching takes place 10 times quicker than with conventional technology, and once the crisis has passed, the unit reverts to replacing the lost charge in the batteries.

Completely dead batteries can also be quickly revived, as the system requires no start up power to go into fast-charger mode.

The Mass Combi is very popular, as it allows all the luxury of uninterrupted mains power on board, yet without any interference to TV or radio signals. It operates in complete silence, and provides a computer-friendly no-spike delivery. There are already 16 models of Mass Combi available in 12 and 24-volt versions, and the new 48-volt models are aimed primarily at yachts with hybrid or pure -electric drive systems, which nearly all run at this higher level of voltage.

As with all Mastervolt equipment, the Mass Combis are engineered for the harsh marine environment, and packaged in a tough yet lightweight aluminium and ABS plastic case. Because Mastervolt designs complete systems, all the components are from one supplier and totally compatible. This allows the Mass Combi to communicate seamlessly with the rest of the yacht’s power management system via a single-wire MasterBus connection.

All the Mass Combi’s activity can be monitored and controlled from a single screen, which fits neatly into a nav station or bulkhead. Available in either 3.5 in or 10.5 in versions, the touch panel can also be used to access all the other Mastervolt equipment on board via the MasterBus link.

PRE-SEASON ADVICE FROM LEADING BATTERY SPECIALIST MASTERVOLT

Mastervolt, the Dutch-based electrical innovator and supplier of premium quality marine batteries, has issued some timely advice to get the best out of your battery bank this season. Mastervolt has 31 batteries in its range, and is also the pioneer of the revolutionary light-weight Lithium Ion 12 and 24-volt models. It has also recently released a brand new 6-volt compact AGM cell for building customized DC power banks.

Marc Persoon, Mastervolt’s Marketing Manager, says "The lifespan of a battery is closely related to the frequency of use, how deep it is being discharged, and how it is maintained. The quality of the battery charger is also a vital factor."

To keep your batteries in peak condition all year round, here are Mastervolt’s top tips:

Watch the temperature: For optimal performance, try to keep the environmental temperature of the batteries between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. Higher temperatures will decrease the lifespan dramatically. Lower temperatures will reduce the available capacity when required, and many older batteries may have been compromised by the recent cold snap. Battery boxes, and the thoughtful location of the bank, will help.

Keep them dry and clean: This will prevent current seeping between the terminals.

Avoid deep discharges: Regular discharges beyond 50% of the nominal capacity are not recommended. Never discharge below the final discharge voltage specified by the battery manufacturer. (Only Mastervolt’s Lithium-Ion batteries can withstand repeated near-exhaustion discharges.)

Recharge immediately: Always top the batteries back up again after a discharge. Incomplete charges may damage the batteries, so they must be charged to the full 100% capacity at least every month.

Don’t mix old and new: Batteries in series or parallel must be of the same brand, type, capacity and state of charge, otherwise the bank will lose significant power. Don’t combine new batteries with old ones, and check the installation recommendations if batteries must be connected in parallel or in series.

Check the terminals: Engine vibration and even the occasional knock with a misplaced foot can loosen a battery terminal just enough to cause problems, such as enough power for lights, but not enough to start an engine. Check them on a regular basis, at least once every three months

Charge when stored: When disconnected and in storage, batteries will self-discharge at a rate of approximately 2-3% per month at 20ºC, but this rate increases considerably at higher temperatures so keep them somewhere cool. The battery manufacturer will recommend how often certain types of battery should be recharged when stored.

Use a proper charger: A cheap, auto-type charger is a false economy, as it won’t charge the batteries in an intelligent way. Mastervolt chargers are specially engineered to guarantee fast-charging with optimal efficiency. Batteries should always be matched to a suitable charger. It will prolong the life of your battery, avoid overcharging damage, and ensure maximum capacity.

LEANER AND GREENER 6-VOLT BATTERIES FROM MASTERVOLT – PERFECT FOR CUSTOMISING BATTERY BANKS IN LIMITED SPACE

Mastervolt, the Dutch-based manufacturer of innovative new electrical products, has proudly launched a range of three new

6-volt AGM batteries. Each high-capacity model is designed to form a building block for a fully customised battery bank, allowing for 12, 24 or 48-volt banks to be created in restricted space onboard.

The new batteries are entirely maintenance free, and can be mounted either vertically, or horizontally. They are also completely safe, as any gasses released during charging are reabsorbed inside. The cases are sealed, and are ventilated by the surrounding air, so there is no need for complex vented battery boxes. Should the battery be significantly overcharged in a faulty system, then a special safety valve will vent away the pressure.

Mastervolt already has an extensive range of Value Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) marine batteries, but the new 6-volt range fills the gap between the 2-volt and the 12-volt models. This has greatly increased the choice of ‘building blocks’ to make a fully customised battery bank, especially as each 6-volt battery is fitted with double terminals to aid multiple connections.

A typical installation could be to provide 24-volts at 400Ah. Normally, two pairs of 12-volt batteries would have to be cross linked, requiring several connections and a lot of floor space. Now, all that is needed are four, very compact 6-volt 400Ah cells simply connected in series.

The new batteries are ideal for moderate cycling applications, such as the new generation of hybrid drives, and are slim enough to be installed under deck furniture. They preserve their charge even after a long winter lay-up.

"Mastervolt is increasingly being recognised as a supplier of top quality batteries," said Marc Persoon, Mastervolt’s Marketing Manager. "The new 6-volt AGM batteries allow a much simpler build-up of a battery bank. Obvious beneficiaries are the latest 48-volt e-propulsion systems, which can take advantage of this increased flexibility."

The new 6-volt range brings the total of Mastervolt battery choices to 31, and the Company is dedicated to a green policy on production and recycling. No cadmium or mercury is used, and a recycling service is offered to Mastervolt customers, which is entirely free, apart from carriage to the factory.

"Our concerns to minimise harmful elements in our batteries, whilst also increasing their service life, led us to pioneer the highly advanced Lithium Ion marine battery," Persoon added.

The 6-volt battery is available in three capacities; 260Ah, 340Ah and 400Ah.

Mastervolt, the leading designer and manufacturer of electrical power systems has acquired the electrical propulsion company, Bellmann.

Dutch-based Bellmann is widely regarded as a leading player in the market for complete electrical propulsion systems, and has been producing dedicated electrical drives for boats since 2002.

The products include drives ranging from 1kW to 20kW complete with matching shafts and propellers, along with control panels and switching gear. The expertise of Bellmann’s Marien Schoonen and Fred Bellis is well known in electric boating circles throughout Europe.

Combining Bellmann’s innovations with those of Mastervolt now provides a completely integrated package for the boating market. Mastervolt specialise in total power management systems, vital for the efficient use of electric and hybrid drives. It also developed the award-winning 24-volt Lithium-Ion marine battery.

Bellmann’s drives and expertise will be integrated immediately into Mastervolt’s dynamic development programme, which has just completed a product-wide review to ensure its own range of chargers, generators and Masterbus systems is fully ‘hybrid ready.’

‘For many boatyards, it is a logical step to move to electric propulsion,’ said Paul Kenninck, Mastervolt’s CEO. ‘Some yards are experimenting with the new technologies, but don’t have a contact with enough all-round knowledge. Mastervolt’s strategy has always been to offer complete solutions, and with the acquisition of Bellmann, we can now offer everything needed for a complete hybrid or dedicated electrical drive system, whatever its configuration.’

These configurations can vary from a simple battery-powered electric drive recharged from the mains, to a fully managed hybrid-drive that can be recharged from a free-wheeling propeller when the boat is under sail. Some yards are now testing electric ‘pod’ drives powered by a generator, which can be placed anywhere aboard, giving designers much more freedom with internal layouts.
